October Plant Tour

Location: U of A Heating Plant, limit 20 participants

Time: 6:30 PM

Parking: Parking on the west side of the heating plant and pay parking in K Zone along the roadway on the north side of the plant. As there is no “free parking” at the University of Alberta, parking without paying is done at your own risk! The Heating Plant is easily accessible via the Capital line LRT stopping at the Health Sciences Jubilee Station.

PPE:

  • Safety glasses
  • Hard hats if you have them
  • Long pants and long sleeve shirts
  • Close toed shoes (no sandals or high heels)

For many years the University of Alberta provided a home for the Institute of Power Engineers, and is well known by past and present members.

For the October tour, we will be visiting the University of Alberta heating plant. The plant consists of (2) - 2800 kPa gas fired and (3) - 6200 kPa gas and oil-fired power boilers, (1) - 13.3 Mw backpressure steam turbo-generator, (1) - 26.4 MW condensing steam turbo-generator with Air Cooled Condenser, (3) - 1.5 Mw diesel generators, (5) - air compressors and (3) - desiccant air-dryers, demineralizer trains and polisher plant. Closed looped chilled water systems and related plant auxiliaries. UCMS network of Emmerson Delta -V process control and UPS systems, etc.

The U of A Plant is well known for its one of a kind underground service corridor that extends an excess of 12 km serving the North Campus, Cross Cancer Institute, Walter C Makenzie Health Center, and the Royal Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

Anyone with interest is welcome to attend, including students and nonmembers. Bring a friend for an educational and entertaining evening. Please let us know with a short email if you are free to attend as the tour is limited to 20 Visitors.

September Plant Tour

Hello everyone, we are back from summer vacation and ready for another school year. For the September tour, we will be visiting the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital and mechanical area. This building was completed in 2012 and replaced the former Fort Saskatchewan Health Centre. This modern facility includes a cafeteria as well as a child health clinic and respiratory rehabilitation.

Anyone with interest is welcome to attend, including students and nonmembers. RSVP please if you are planning to attend as the space is limited to 16 Visitors. Also for security and you are getting used to this by now, we will be sending a list of visitors’ names to the hospital supervisor.

We look forward to seeing you all again in just less than two weeks’ time!

June Annual Family BBQ

This month we have a special guest speaker Mr. Lorne Shewfelt, PE visiting with us to discuss super critical boilers. Mr. Shewfelt is a 1st class power engineer and Senior Member with the IPE. Mr. Shewfelt works with Trans Alta in the Wabamun Lake area and is a key piece of the machine that supplies electricity to the City of Edmonton and surrounding areas. Please plan to attend this meeting and hear Mr. Lorne Shewfelt speak about power boilers and high pressure steam applications. As always, all members, students and non-members are welcome to attend. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Saturday Bus Tour to Cenovus Christina Lake SAGD facility

PPE Required: Safety glasses, steel toe boots, hard hat and fire retardant coveralls are required at Cenovus.

We had previously announced the Cenovus tour for May 27th however we were mistaken. The tour date we have arranged with Cenovus will be Saturday May the 20th. Please accept our apologies for any disruptions to planning or schedules.

We are excited to share with you a very special event on Saturday, May the 27th. We will be meeting up with a coach bus at 5:30 on Saturday morning, and traveling north to Conklin, AB, where we will be granted special visitor access to Cenovus Energy’s oilsands megaproject at Christina Lake.

Cenovus is the leader in environmentally responsible oilsands production using SAGD technology (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) and their Christina Lake complex is the largest of its kind in Alberta. This is a rare opportunity to visit one of the leading oilsands projects in the world and to receive a special guided tour from the senior staff members at Cenovus.

Of course, we need your participation to make this event a success and we are looking for 20 to 40 Members to make this trip possible so please RSVP with your commitment to attend. There will be a reasonable fee of $40 per Member ($30 per Student Member) to assist with the cost of the bus and bus driver for the day. All Members and Student Members are welcome to attend. Also, if your class mates are interested in attending, they can talk to me and we can have them enrolled as Student Members and include them on the tour as well.

March Plant Tour

For the March tour, we will be visiting the Agropur Edmonton Ice Cream plant. Yes, we have all seen this in our travels and some of you may recognize it as the old Safeway warehouse. This plant was Safeway’s largest ice cream plant and was recently purchased by Sobeys and Agropur. Some of the products made here you will recognize like Lucerne, Compliments and Natrel.

Anyone with interest is welcome, including students. RSVP please if you are planning to attend as the space is limited to 18 Visitors. We will need to provide our name, email and phone number to Agropur so please include those with your RSVP.

This month we have a special guest speaker Mr. Sam Seepersad, PE visiting with us to discuss water treatment. Mr. Sam Seepersad, PE, has over 50 years’ experience in water treatment, corrosion analysis and chemical engineering technology. Water chemistry is complex and many of us have struggled with this theory. Please plan to attend this meeting and hear Mr. Seepersad talk about water treatment. As always, all members, students and non-members are welcome to attend. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

On the agenda for the January tour we will be visiting the Legislature Building in Edmonton. There is a good chance this will be a general tour of the government building. December Dinner and Meeting

Where: Radisson Hotel Edmonton South Price: $27.95

Come out for a night of Prime Rib and Seafood buffet with all the trimmings. Cost per person is $27.95. For those who have reached over 60 years of age $25.95. The installation for the 2017 Executive Officers will also be held. RSVP please if you are planning to attend as the space is limited.

December Dinner meeting will be December 10th, yes, a Saturday night at the Radisson Hotel Edmonton South 4440-Gateway Blvd, Edmonton. Just north of the Delta hotel. What will be served is Prime Rib and Seafood buffet c/w all the trimmings, cost per person not including 17% gratuity $27.95, those who have reached over 60 years of age $25.95, (wisdom does have its rewards).

June Picnic CANCELED

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the June 21. 2016 BBQ is CANCELED. It is tentatively rebooked for Tuesday, September 13, 2016. An e-mail will be sent in late August to register. Same place, same site.
